What is Fair? Rights and Justice Unit for Kindergarten

Throughout my experience as a practicum student in Kindergarten classroom, I was always surprised by how often I heard someone declare "that's not fair!".  I thought it would be interesting to create a unit based off of the premise of what is fair.  The following unit is created to help answer the following essential questions:

·   What does it mean to be "fair"?

·  How do we decide if something is fair?

·   What are our experiences with fairness (in our lives, in history)

·  Why is it important to be fair?

·  What can we do to change an unfair situation?

The five-lesson unit that I have created is designed to answer these questions through topics from social studies, mathematics, language arts, and drama components.  It uses students' prior understanding of the concepts of "fair" to address their lives, concepts of equality, historical contexts of fairness in the Civil Rights Movement and situation-resolving skills.
